Every year I organize a speech contest. During this event the students recite poems, speeches, etc. It is a great way for kids to showcase their talents. Although many people love and support the contest, I am considering adding a new category…A Pecha Kucha.
Pecha Kucha is a way of presenting with PowerPoint, in which the speaker organizes 20 slides that automatically change every 20 seconds. This allows the speaker to share thoroughly, however succinctly.
I have been playing around with the idea of student authored Pecha Kuchas for the last 6 months and thought the Speech Contest would be a great event to give it a try. Here is what I am planning:
- 3rd -5th grade only (the event is for elementary schools)
- 10 slides
- 10 seconds/per slide
- 1st slide must be and introductory slide
- last slide must be a conclusion slide
- the Powerpoint would be shown on large screen on stage
- the speaker would be on the front corner of the stage
- cards would be allowed
I think this will showcase the students technology, creativity and public speaking skills, while they participate in a real-world, authentic acitivity.
Now…hmmm how will it be judged? As you see I have more thinking to do. I’ll keep you posted!
